First we have to be sure we're in a business that has people willing to pay for our services, and we have to be the best at what we do so that people will choose us. The product we've decided to sell (everyone has to sell something to make a living), has to have enough dollar sales and mark up for us to make a profit. Then we have to reduce our costs of production, marketing, and overhead.
Reducing our costs seems pretty easy to do on the surface. Most of us naturally try to find better-priced suppliers, and buy as little as possible. We outsource what we can, and try to use cheep help whenever possible. This can be a double-edged sward, as going too cheap can reduce quality to a point where we lose buyers. I say pay a little more and sell a top-notch product to people who have money to pay for what you sell.
Reducing the price of marketing, can be done by moving most marketing to the web. Anyone who hasn't noticed that marketing has moved to the web had better reconsider. There are very few industries now a days that need to rely on outdated marketing like the yellow pages or newspaper classified adds. I've seen the dated yellow book shrink to one-fifth the size in a three-year period. Moving marketing to the web doesn't mean that there will be no cost for marketing. Switching to the web only means that marketing will be cheaper than traditional methods, and that you will get much more bang for the buck. People who understand how to use the web for marketing will have a big advantage over those who don't.
Reducing overhead can have an enormous impact on your monthly net – especially if you're going from a brick-and-mortar location to a home office or a virtual office. It can be a scary thing to do, and can often feel like you're moving backwards, but in reality if your web presence is good, you can pull it off and pocket thousands per month.
